Abstract

This research focuses on the translating of Javanese lexicons in Ahmad Tohari’s novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk into English. It discusses the translation strategies used in translating Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk: Catatan Buat Emak into The Dancer and the fidelity of the renderings. This research is descriptive in nature, which involves the following steps: collecting, classifying, and analyzing the data. The population of this research is all the Javanese lexicons in Ahmad Tohari’s novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk: Catatan Buat Emak. The technique applied to take the sample is total sampling. The translational equivalent method is applied to determine the strategy used to overcome translation problem. Furthermore, to judge the fidelity of renderings, translational equivalent method is also used. The total number of the data is 86 Javanese lexicons. The result of the data analysis shows that 17(19,7%) Javanese lexicons are rendered with translation by a more general word; 7 (8,13%) Javanese lexicons are rendered by translation using cultural substitution; 12 (13,9%) Javanese are rendered by translation using a loan word plus explanation; 24 (27,9%) Javanese are rendered with translation by paraphrase using an unrelated word; 5 (5,8%) Javanese lexicons are rendered with translation by cultural substitution; 23 (26,7%) Javanese lexicons are rendered by changing the lexicon with its equivalent in target language; 60 (69,7%) Javanese lexicons are translated faithfully; and 26 (30,2%) Javanese lexicons are included in unfaithful translation.
