Abstract

This study discusses English noun phrases. It focuses on three problems namely, the patterns of English noun phrases in relation to structures of modification and the categories as well as the forms of modifiers in English noun phrases. This research is descriptive in nature, which involves the following steps: collecting, classifying, and analyzing the data. The source of the data is the English novel Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows written by J. K. Rowling. The population of this research is all of the sentences containing noun phrases within them. To obtain the sample, this research applies purposive sampling. In terms of its pattern, a noun phrase may be of modifier – head (M – H), of head – modifier (H – M), and of modifier – head – modifier (M – H – M). Besides, due to its category, modifier may be a noun, a verb, an adjective, an adverb, or a function word. Meanwhile, in relation to its form, modifier may be a word, a phrase, or a clause. Next, the modifiers within the noun phrases are 341 in number. They are 21 nouns (6,16%) as modifier, 33 verbs (9,68%) as modifier, 103 adjectives (30,21%) as modifier, 3 adverbs (0,88%) as modifier, and 181 function words (53,08%) as modifier. Furthermore, the modifiers in the form of word are 256 in number including 229 simple words (89,45%), 6 compound words (2,34%), and 21 complex words (8,20). Then, the modifiers in the form of phrase are 61 in number. They include 7 noun phrases (11,48%), 15 verbal phrases (24,59%), 2 adjective phrases (3,28%), and 37 prepositional phrases (60,66%).
