Abstract

This study discusses English participial phrases. It focuses on three problems, namely their functions, their transformations, and their Indonesian renderings. This research is descriptive in nature, which involves the following steps: collecting, classifying, and analyzing the data. The source of the data is the English novel The Lost Symbol written by J. K. Rowling and its Indonesian version with the same title. The population of this research is all of the sentences containing participial phrases within them. To obtain the sample, this research applies total sampling. Therefore, all of the data are analyzed one by one. The data of the research are 100 sentences which contain participial phrases within them. The participial phrases intended include present participial phrases and past participial phrases. The data analysis shows that 92 data are present participial phrases and 38 data are past participial phrases. Functionally, participial phrases may act as modifier and complement in a sentence construction. Among the 130 data, 128 of them act as modifier, namely modifier of pro(noun). While, 2 data serve as complement, that is, objective complement. Due to their transformation,participial phrases may be derived from adjective and adverb clauses. In fact, 74data could be derived from adjective clauses and 56 data can be derived from adverb clauses. Based on their Indonesian renderings, participial phrases are rendered as single words, phrases, clauses, or sentences. In the novel 2 participial phrases are rendered as phrases, 126 participial phrases are rendered as clauses,and 2 participial phrases are rendered as sentences. There is no participial phrase rendered as single word. Likewise, 129 of the participial phrases fulfill the fidelity in their Indonesian renderings. Then, 1 participial phrase does not fulfill the fidelity.
