Abstract

This final assignment discusses patriarchy on Okonkwo's family that exists in the novel Things Fall Apart written by Chinua Achebe. It also discusses the kinds of patriarchy and its effects on Okonkwo. Library method is applied during the making of this thesis. The availability of internet network nowadays is very useful in collecting the related theories to support the main data. The appropriateness of the use of theories is very important in analyzing the data. Applying the theories of character, characterization, patriarchy, setting, and ethnicity in this thesis are very proper to solve the problems. Two approaches, that is, psychological and sociological approaches are also applied in this thesis for completing the existing theories. There are three kinds of patriarchy on Okonkwo's family in Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart. They are father as the head of the family, father as the ruler of the family, and father as the breadwinner of the family. There are two effects of patriarchy on Okonkwo, that is, the positive and negative effects. The positive effects are working hard in order to obtain the title,to gain honour, and to achieve good reputation; and being a hero fo his clan and his family. The negative effects are possessing absolute authority, being uncontrolled, being a sexist, not showing affection to the other family members, and practicing polygamy.
