Abstract

The researcher discusses the structure of modification which is one of the English syntactic structures. Structure of modification has two immediate constituents, that is, head and modifier. In analyzing the structure of modification,the researcher determines (1) the form and (2) the category of head and modifier.Head and modifier have various forms and categories. Due to their form, head and modifier may be words, phrases, and clauses. Meanwhile, according to their category, head and modifier may be nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and function words. This research is descriptive in nature, so the data here are collected,classified, and interpreted in order to draw a conclusion. The source of the data are taken from the texts of "Essay” column in Time magazine of June 9 and 23,2008. The population is 134 structures of modification and all of the population used as sample. The analysis technique used is expansion technique, that is a way the addition of other elements into the existing ones to expand the original sentences. The data analysis shows that heads in the form of word are 20 in number (15%) including 8 simple words, 3 compound words, and 9 complex words. Next,heads in the form of phrases are 16 in number (12%). They include 9 noun phrases, 6 verb phrases, and 1 adjective phrase. But, the researcher does not find any structure of modification whose head is adverb phrase and prepositional phrase. Further, heads in the form of clauses are 9 in number (7%), which are main clauses. While, modifiers in the form of word are 14 in number (10%)including 9 simple words, 1 compound word, and 4 complex words. Then,modifiers in the form of phrase are 18 in number (13%). They include 1 noun phrase, 2 verbal phrases, 1 adjective phrase, 1 adverb phrase, and 13 prepositional phrases. Next, modifiers in the form of clause are 7 in number (5%) including 2adjective clauses and 5 adverb clauses. The researcher also finds that 23 in number (17%) the category as head. They are 10 nouns as head, 7 verb(al) as head, 5 adjectives as head, and 1 adverb as head. But, the researcher does not find structure of modification whose head is function words. Furthermore, the category as modifier is 27 in number (20%). They are 4 nouns as modifier, 3 verbal as modifier, 10 adjective as modifier, 7 adverb as modifier,and 3 function words as modifier.
