Abstract

This research discusses the study of word formation through shortening. They are acronym, back formation, blending, and clipping. In this research, the research analyzes the two problems, namely the kinds of formation processes of shortened word and the Indonesian equivalents from which the word formations are derived in internet. The method of research used in this research is descriptive method. This method uses some steps: collecting, classifying, and analyzing the data. The data consist of the kinds of formation processes of shortened word and the equivalents of the shortened words in Indonesian which undergo word formation processes taken from internet. The research finds 36 (37,44%) acronyms are composed of the first latters in order, 13 (13,52%) acronyms are composed of the combination of letters and numerals, 7 (7,28%) are back formation, 19 (19,76%) are blending, 6 (6,24%) are clipping at the beginning of the word, 18 (18,72%) are clipping at the end of the word, 5 (5,2%) are clipping at both the beginning and the end of the word, the equivalents in Indonesian comprising 16 (12,48%) acronyms are composed of initial latters in order, and 3 (3,12%) clipping at the end of the word.
