Abstract

This thesis discusses about bifunctional function words in english sentences. This thesis will answer two questions, namely the structure of bifunctional function words and the uses of bifunctional function words. In this research, the researcher uses descriptive method because it is conducted as the most appropriate method in relation with the problems of this research. This method uses some steps: collecting, classifying, and analyzing. At last, the researcher gives the conclusion.Meanwhile, the data of this research are sentences which contain function words found in Newsweek magazine. In fact, the population of this research is 100sentences. So, it is not too large in number to analyze. That is why, this study applies total sampling. It means that all of the data are analyzed one by one. There are five structures of bifunctional function words namely, the overlapping of the structure of preposition and conjunction, the overlapping of the structure of to, the overlapping of the structure of adverbial particle and preposition, the overlapping of the structure of primary auxiliary and verb, and the overlapping of the structure of determiner, pronoun and adverb. Furthermore, the researcher finds nine uses of bifunctional function words in this research. They are preposition, conjunction, adverbial particle, verb, auxiliary verb, pronoun, determiner, adverb, and the infinitive marker to. By doing this research, the reseacher finds that even though function words have the same orthographic words, they have different uses in the different sentences. It can be seen from their structures in the sentences.
