Abstract

This research focuses on the words in lexical relations. There are three questions to answer. First, what words are in lexical relation semantically?Second, how are the words interrelated?. Third, what are the classes of those words? To achieve the objectives, this thesis uses descriptive in nature for collecting the data, that is collecting, classifying, and interpreting the data.there are two kinds of data: primary and secondary data. The primary data are obtained from the writer of the novel. The secondary data are taken from the novel itself and some theories and references which support this research. The analysis of lexical relations is divided into two. The first one is how are the words interrelated in Sidney Sheldon's The Sands of Time. The words are include in kinds of lexical relations, namely synonymy,homonymy,antonymy,polysemy, and hyponymy. The second, the researcher analyzes the classes of lexical relations found in the novel. The lexical relations may include in noun,verb,adverb, adjective, and function word. The result of the data analysis shows that the lexical relations include as synonymy are 11 (24,44%), as homynymy 12 (26,67%), as antonymy 16(35,56%), as polysemy 1 (2,22%),and hyponymy 5 (11,11%). In fact, the lexical relations in the novel Sidney Sheldon's The Sands ofTime function as noun, verb,adverb, adjective, and function word. Meanwhile, the lexical relations undergoing noun are 35 (38,89%), verb are 14 (15,56%), adverb are 9 (10%), adjective are 23(25,55%), and function word are 9(10%).
