Abstract

The smallest meaningful unit part of utterance is called morpheme.There are two kinds of morphemes: free morphemes and bound morphemes.Bound morphemes are affixes - prefixes and suffixes. English noun can be formed by the addition of certain suffixes to verb, adjective, or noun.The suffixes intended are suffix-ship, suffix-age, suffix-cy,suffix-scape,suffix -er/-eer, suffix -ist, suffix -ing, suffix -ation/-tion, suffix -ity, suffix -or,suffix -ent/-ant, suffix -ness, suffix-dom,suffix-ster,suffix-ure,suffix-ism,suffix-ance/-ence,suffix-ment,suffix-al,suffix-th,suffix-logy,suffix -y,and suffix-ty. In this research, the researcher uses descriptive method because this method is considered more suitable with the problems of this research.This method is used with some steps: collecting, classifying, and analyzing the data.While, the data of this research are noun suffixes found in Holland Horizon magazine of March 1, 2000, of September 1, 2001, of June 2, 2003, of September 3, 2003, of December 4,2004, and of March4, 2005. In doing the research,the resea.rcher does not use any sample because all of thedata,that is,120 noun suffixes in 120 sentences are analyzed one by one. The data analysis shows that the percentage of the use of those noun suffixes is as follows: suffix-ship 7 (5,83%), suffix-age 4 (3,33%), suffix-cy 3 (2,50%), suffix --scape 1 (0,83%), suffix-er/-eer 15 (12,50%), suffix-ist 5(4,16%), suffix-ing 10 (8,33%), suffix-alion/-tion 31 (25,83%), suffix-ity 6(5%), suffix-or 3 (2,50%), suffix-ent/-ant 3 (2,50%), suffix-ness 4 (3,33%),suffix-dom 2 (1,66%),suffix-ster 1 (0,83%), suffix-ure 1 (0,83%), suffix-ism 1 (0,83%),suffix-ance/-ence 7 (5,83%), suffix-ment 8 (6,66%), suffix -al 3 (2,50%), suffix-th 1(0,83%),suffix-logy 2 (1,66%),suffix-y1(0.83%),and suffix -ty 1 (0,83%). So, the most productive usage of noun suffix is -ation/-ion (31 or 25,83%).
