Abstract
Literature is a written material which plays an important role in our life for it is way in which we can experience the world around us through our thought and feeling. Literature deals with three main parts, they are prose(novel), drama and poetry. Prose is the most interesting part among them. Reading prose stimulates the readers' imagination, so it becomes an interesting subject to analyze. The writer chooses Fyodor Dostoevsky's Notes from Underground as a source of data. Since many conflicts appear in this novel, the writer analyzes the psychological condition on the main character in Notes from Underground. It is stated that the main character, which is called the Underground Man, has been through many conflicts in his life. He is in conflict, not only within himself but also with others. All those conflicts give a great impact in his life and affects his life as well. He lives in a world of fantasy that he cannot distinguish which one is reality and which one is fantasy. The thesis presents three objectives of the study. The first discusses the Underground Man's psychological condition. He is solitary being who is unable to make friend with others. He is incapable of controlling his emotion that causes conflicts within himself and with others. He has conflicts with his old school fellows: Zverkov, Simonov, Trudolyubov, and Ferfichkin, with his servant:Apollon, with his prostitute: Liza and he has an internal conflict as well. The second deals with the causes of psychological condition of the Underground Man. For he has conflict with others, it affects him psychologically. He just cannot accept when someone humiliates and ignores him. He wants to dominate everyone he meets. The last one explains the main character's attitude toward the condition. The Underground Man is such a stubborn person. Although he learns something from his conflicts and life, he does not want to change his attitude. He prefers to hide in his underground world alone.
