Abstract

The objectives of the study are to describe the meaning and the use of automotive register of Volvo 960 owner's manual book. The underlying theories are the theories that deal with sociolinguistics, dialect, register, conceptual meaning and associative meaning. The data are taken from Volvo 960 manual book. To analyze the meaning of register, the writer uses referential equivalent methods and to analyze the use of automotive register, the writer applies pragmatics equivalent method. The data are analyzed descriptively. The meaning and the use of register is discussed according to the nine sections of the manual book. (1) Instrument Control, for example, gauge means measure. This is used for measurement tool like outside temperature gauge, fuel gauge, boost pressure gauge, and temperature gauge. (2) Body and Interior, for example, central locking door. It refers to a condition that all doors and the boot are locked and unlocked automatically from the lock on the driver's door.(3)Starting and Driving, for example, throttle pedal. It is an instrument to lessen the car's speed. (4) Wheels and Tires, for example, tread wear indicators is automotive register that indicate the certain condition of a tire. (5) In Case of Emergency, for example, misfiring refer to a condition of a motor eng ne that fail to ignite in cylinder.(6) Car Care, for example, rust-proofing refer to a body car protection because of using certain anti-corrosive material. (7) Service and Routine Maintenance, for example, the 4-cylinder engine compartment refers to panel machine box. (8) Specifications, for example, chassis type refers to base framework of a vehicle. (9) Emission Control, for example, catalytic converter refers to supplementary device in the exhaust system, designed to clean exhaust gases.
