Abstract

This research is intended to know how the Javanese terms is Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk are translated into English in The Dancer by Rene T.A Lysloff. The researcher refers to the three alternatives of cultural translation, namely (1)translating the idea of Source Language lexicon, (2)changing the lexicon with its equivalence in Target Language, and (3) using the lexicon in Target Language and adding a note. Furthermore, the researcher also wants to know the level of fidelity of the translation, whether they reach high level, mid level, or low level of fidelity. The source of the data is a novel by Ahmad Tohari entitled Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk which is translated into The Dancer by Rene T.A Lysloff. There are many Javanese cultural terms is the novel. Thus, this novel is an appropriate novel to be analyzed. This research uses descriptive method. The researcher collects the data from the novel after reading it. Then, the researcher classifies them into three ways of cultural translation and analyzes them. Finally, the researcher takes conclusion based on the analysis. The result of the analysis is that, from the 70 data containing Javanese terms, there are 15 Javanese terms (21%) which are translated by using the first alternative, namely translating the idea of Source Language lexicon. There are 40Javanese terms (58%) which are translated by using the second alternative, namely changing the lexicon with its equivalence in Target Language. Finally, there are 15Javanese terms (21%) which are translated by using the third alternative, namely using the lexicon in Target Language and adding a note. Concerning with the level of fidelity of the cultural translation, the analysis shows that 51 data (73%) achieve high level of fidelity, 3 data (4%) achieve mid level of fidelity, and 16 data (23%)achieve low level of fidelity.
