Abstract

Novel is one of literature form, like drama and poetry. Novel relates directly with personal life, so novel is so nice to be read, learned, and enjoyable reading. Further more, novel is a story, which gives illustration of living and brings some messages to the readers, and then they will be able to develop their ideas and feelings. Even, they can catch the important values of living in society, which is pressed in the novel. The writing of novel is influenced by experience of the writer and the condition of society at that time too. Then, the writer tries to illustrate the condition of society and his or her experience into a novel in order that the readers can read his or her writing. The writer uses deductive method to analyze the data, which is the writer analyzes the object from general thing into specific thing. Bes ide that, the writer uses library research that is the writer collects some books about pessimism literature. The object of research is a novel of Fitzgerald; the title is Tender is The Night. The interesting thing from this novel is the failure of Dick Diver, which makes him sink into pessimism feeling. Dick comes from common family in USA. He is smart, handsome, and young psychiatrist who dreams to be rich and succeed psychiatrist, but he cannot. To realize his dream, he gets married a woman who is mental patient, Nicole Warren, from rich family without agreement of his friend. Dick must be a husband and also as her doctor. They have two children. The condition of Nicole becomes unstable after knowing that Dick has affair with Rosemary. Dick feels tired with Nicole sickness. Finally, he divorces his wife and marries Tommy Barban. After facing lots problems, Dick runs to alcohol. His friend knows this condition. He lost the believed from his patients. They leave the clinic. Dr. Gregory, his close patients and his friend for years leaves him too. He has no self-confident anymore. Dick leaves his clinic. He has no job anymore. He is alone and has nothing. His life is so sad.
