Abstract

Compound word consists of two or more morphemes that join together to form a single word. The English compound words are often regarded as difficult matters for those who are learning English. It is because the understanding on compound words is mainly based on their function in a sentence. Concerning to the background, this thesis concerns with the formation processes, the grammatical categories, and the meaning of those English compound words. The categories of compound words are of four types. They are compound nouns, compound verbs, compound adjectives, and compound adverbs. The components of compound words can be noun and noun, noun and verb, noun and adjective, et cetera. These components cannot be inserted by any other components. Further, the function of compound words in sentence determines the grammatical categories to which English compounds belong. Next, the meaning of compound words is not only the sum of the meaning of their elements, but aIso the extension of individual parts. In conducting this research, the researcher applied descriptive method. It was done by collecting, classifying, and analyzing the data. The data of this research are compound words found in Holland Horizon magazine. In this research, the researcher did not apply any sample, so all of the data were analyzed by explaining one by one. Only some of the data analyses are presented in chapter four, while the others are included in the list of data. The analysis of the data was done by describing and identifying the formation processes, the grammatical categories, and the meaning of English compound words. The result of the data analysis reveals that 89 (76,7%) of compound words perform as compound nouns, 8(6,9%) as compound verbs, 16(13,8%) as compound adjectives, and 3(2,6%) as compound adverbs. Further, 15(16,8%) compound nouns function as subject of verb, 16(17,9%) as modifier of noun, 34(38,2%) as objeci of preposition, 5(5,6%) as object of verb phrase, 2(2,2%) as direct object, 3(3,4%) as appositive of subject, 3(3,4%) as subjective complement, 3(3,4%) as object of gerund, 5(5,6%) as object of verb, 2(2,2%) as objective complement, and 1(1,1%) as complement of linking verb. While, all of the compound verbs function as predicate are 8 (100%). Next, compound adjectives 13(81,3%) function as modifier of noun, and 3(18,3%) as subjective complement. Meanwhile, compound adverbs which function as subjective complement are 2(66,7%), and as modifier of entire sentence is 1(33,3%).
