Abstract
In this research, the writer discusses Participial Phrase that occurs in articles of Holland Horizon magazine published every three months. The writer wants to study deeper about Participial Phrase by analyzing the structures of Participial Phrase used in article of Holland Horizon magazine, the functions of Participial Phrase used in article of Holland Horizon magazine, and the kinds of Participial Phrase used in article of Holland Horizon magazine. The writer uses descriptive method in making this research, by collecting the data, classifying the data and making analysis. At last, the writer gives the conclusion. The source of data in making this research is the articles of Holland Horizon magazine that are published in 1999 to 2003. Based on this research, the writer finds that participial phrase has two different structures. The first is Present Participial Phrase (56%), classified into “present participle + modifier + complement (36%) and “present participle +modifier" (20%), the second is Past Participial Phrase (44%), classified into “past participle + modifier '+ complement" (18%) and “past participle + modifier"(26%). After all data have been analyzed, the writer comes to conclusion that Participial Phrase has two functions, as a Subjective Complement (76%) and an Objective Complement (24%). There are two kinds of participial phrases, Restrictive Participial Phrase (28%) and Nonrestrictive Participial Phrase (52%).
