Abstract
The objectives of the research entitled The Revenge of Edmond Dantes Reflecting His Suffering in Alexandre Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo are (1) to clarify the causes of Edmond Dantes' revenge and (2) to clarify the effects of Edmond Dantes' revenge on the other characters. In this writing, the writer uses library research including internet browsing in order to find the data. Psychological approach and sociological approach are used to analysis the data descriptively. The causes of Edmond Dantes' revenge are: (1) Danglars' hatred. At that time, Edmond is chosen by M. Morrel to become new captain in Le Pharaon replacing captain Leclere. (2) Fernand's jealousy. Fernand loves Mercedes very much and will do anything to rape Mercedes even slander Edmond. (3) Villefort and Mercedes' betrayal. Villefort betrays Edmond's trust by taking Edmond in jail. Meanwhile, Mercedes betrays Edmond by marrying with Fernand. Edmond avenges not only to people who cause his suffering but also to their family. Firstly, Edmond Dantes avenges on Danglars' family. His revenge gives effects on Danglars' bankruptcy, on Danglars' loss of honor and on Madame Danglars' psychological illness. Secondly, his revenge deliberates to Fernand's family and gives effects on Fernand's loss of honor, on Mercedes' psychological illness, on Mercedes' loss of love, on Albert de Morcerf's loss ofhonor. Thirdly, the Edmond Dantes' suffering causes him to punish Villefort's family. His revenge gives effects on Monsieur de Villefort's loss of honor and Valentine de Villefort and others' murder.
