Abstract

Translation is not only a transfer of meaning from one language to another, but a transfer of dynamic and culture as well. That is why, a competent translator should be bath a good bilingual and a bicultural expert, so he/she is supposed to be capable of solving any translation problem he/she faces. This paper aims to reveal the problems commonly encountered by a translator in doing his/ her work. The problem intended are concerned with the aspects of untranslatability, either linguistic or cultural in nature. Besides, some alternative solutions on the problems are proposed. The solutions offered here are the ideas belonging to international linguists, Indonesian experts in translation, and writers in translation field. The problems, together with the suggested solutions, are supported by some examples in English, Indonesian, Javanese, Batak, etcetera. In addition, a few of the Indonesian examples are the renderings from other languages translated by the writer himself.
