The purpose of this research was to reveal the personality characteristics of elementary school teacher who practised harshness-either verbal or nonverbal-to enforce discipline on students. Besides, this study also explored the ways practised by teachers to enforce discipline on students as well as their effects on the students. The method applied in this research was qualitative in nature with case-study approach. This study was conducted at a state elementary school in Madiun Regency. The respondents of this research were two teachers, one of whom practised harshness to enforce discipline on his students, while the other served as a preliminary study. The data collecting was performed using focused-group discussion, nonparticipant observation, interview, and psychological instrument. The result of the study showed that harshness-based discipline-either verbal or nonverbal-caused bad effects on students for a long time, due to the fact that elementary school students are already able to grasp a perception on the discipline enforcement practised by teachers. This perception could influence the self-concept or self-regard of students in relation to the personality characteristics of teachers, the figures that may be made good examples.
