Abstract

The Objectives of this study, entitled Sarah’s Infidelity in Graham Greene’s The End of the Affair are: 1) to explain the effects of Sarah’s infidelities in The End of the Affair and 2) to explain the effects of Sarah’s infidelity toward herself and the other characters in The End of the Affair. In formulating the analysis, the library research including the internet browsing is used for collecting the data. The main data are taken from novel entitled The End of the Affair. The theories are used in this research are theories of character, characterization, and infidelity. Furthermore, two approaches, that is, psychological and sociological approaches are also applied in this thesis for completing the theories. This research focuses on the three major characters, they are, Maurice Bendrix, Henry Miles, and Sarah Miles. There are two kinds of infidelities done by Sarah. The first is Sarah’s infidelity toward Henry and the second is Sarah’s infidelity toward Maurice. There are three effects because of Sarah’s infidelity. The first is the effects of Sarah’s infidelity toward herself. They are feeling guilty, feeling unhappy, being selfish, being unfaithful, and being jealous. The second is the effects of Sarah’s infidelity toward Maurice. They are being disappointed, being sad, and being angry. The third is the effects of Sarah’s infidelity toward Henry. They are being hurt and being sad.
