Abstract

The objectives of the study entitled An Analysis of Symbols in Nathaniel Howthorne's The House of the Seven Gables are (1) to find out characteristic symbolism (2) to find out setting symbolism (3) to find out natural object symbolism(4)to find out artificial symbolism in The House of the even Gables. To formulate the analysis, the writer uses library research including the internet browsing to support the data. The main data are taken from novel of The House of the Seven Gables. Theories that are used to analyze the data are symbol,character, and setting. Furthermore, the äpproaches used in this research are sociological and psychological approach. This research only focuses on symbols. The characters which are considered as symbols are Hepzibah Pycheon, Pheobe Pycheon,Clifford Pyncheon, Jaffrey Pyncheon, and Holgrave Maule. While the house of the seven gables,Pyncheon garden and railway station are considered as setting symbolism.Moreover, the natural objects that are found are the cloud, the elm tree, the chicken, the light and the dark. The last, Maule's spring and the portrait are considered as artificial symbolism.
