Abstract

This research focuses on non-finiteverbs in English which occur in Stephenie Meyer's novel. The aims of this research are to analyze the kinds and functions of non-finite verbs in English. The researcher uses distributional method to analyze the kinds and functions of non-finite verbs. The source of the data is taken from the English novel entitled Twilight written by Stephenie Meyer.The population of this research is all of the sentences containing non-finite verbs. To obtain the sample,this research applies total sampling. It means that the technique is done by stating the whole number of population served in analysis. The result of this analysis shows that there are 97 data which are included into non-finite verbs. Furthermore, there are three kinds of non-finite verbs;they are infinitives, participles, and gerund. The data analysis shows that 45 data are infinitive which consist of 15 data as bare infinitive and 30 data as to infinitive.Next, 29 data are participles which consist of 17 data as present participle and 12data as past participle. And the last, 23 data are gerund. Then,there are four functions of non-finite verbs, which are as subject,object,complement, and modifier. The data analysis indicates that 6 data(to infinitive and gerund) function as subject in sentence. Further, 21 data (to infinitive and gerund) function as object in sentence which consist of 13 data (to infinitive and gerund) as direct object and 8 data (gerund) as object of preposition.Next, 13 data (to infinitive, present participle, and past participle) function as complement in sentence which include 2 data (to infinitive and gerund) as subjective complement and 11 data (to infinitive, present participle, and past participle) as objective complement. Furthermore, 25 data (to infinitive, present participle, and past participle) function as modifier in sentence which include 5data (to infinitive, present participle, and past participle) as modifier of pro(noun), 13 data (to infinitive) as modifier of verb, 6 data (to infinitive) as modifier of adjective, 1 datum (to infinitive) is modifier of adverb,and 1 datum (to infinitive) is modifier of sentence.
