Abstract

This thesis discusses The Pragmatic Attitudes and Actions in Obtaining the Gal a Case study of the Main Character in Lilian Helman's Drama Children Hour. It focuses on three objectives of the study: (1) To describe the goal wanted to be obtain by the main character, (2) to analyze pragmatic attitudes and actions of the main character, and (3) to analyze the effects of pragmatic attitudes and action of the main character. The theories which are used in this study are the theorie of attitudes,actions,pragmatism,principle of pragmatiss; optimistic, practical, compromise,result oriented, and the relationship between philosophy and Literature.Moreover philosophical approach is taken to analyze the data. Then library research including internet browsing is used to find the conceptual data of the pragmatic attitudes and actions. The data of this thesis are all of the phrases,clause, sentence, and discourse that have relation with thePragmatic Attitudes and Actions in Obtaining the Goal a Case study of The Main Character in Lilian Helman Drama Children Hour. There are two goals that Mary wants to obtain. The main is Mary wants to leave the Wright-Dobie school. And the minor goal are to avoiding punishment and being assumed innocent. Mary's pragmatic attitudes and actions are optimisctic; she feels certain that she will succeed in her escape, feeling certain that her escape will be backed up,feeling certain that she will find the way to run away. Mary is also practical;she uses her friends, her teachers and also her grandmother to reach her goals.However, she can compromise with the inconvenient condition. Mary is result oriented. She can deceive others, create rumors, persuade people, and also insisting another people to get what she wants. All of the effects are negatives. Finally, Mary can reach her goal although her pragmatic attitudes and action bring a lot of problems to her surrounding.
