Abstract

The objectives of this research are: (1) to figure out The mothers' dark background, (2) to explain The Bad influence of mothers' background on the daughters. The Joy Luck Club is used as the primary source to analyze the thesis.While thesecondary source are books, reference, and article which are used to support the analysis of the primary data. In order to answer the problem, a psychological approach and sociological approach are applied because these study concern with analyzing the influence of mothers' background to the daughters. It is an interesting novel since it discusses about the influence of mothers'background to the daughters. The novel talks about mothers and her daughters who undergo conflict in their relationship. This conflict happens because the mothers raise their children by combining the values between Chinese and American culture. The four mothers in the novel have difficulties in raising their children not only because of the different cultures but also the language barrier.The conflict keeps appearing until the daughters are grown up. Finally, the writer concludes that, as the children of Chinese immigrant,they are aware that they live in a free status-bound society. They reject their mothers' cultural values. Their mothers' bad experiences informer life in China had influenced them on how they face their life in America
