Abstract

The objectives of the study entitled The Effects of Incompatibilities between Dreams and Individual Responsibilities in Edith Wharton's Ethan Frome are (1) determine and explain the incompatibilities between dreams and individual responsibilities in Edith Wharton's Ethan Frome. (2) find out and describe the effects of the incompatibilities between dreams and individual responsibility in Edith Wharton's Ethan Frome. The writer applies the library research including internet browsing in collecting the data. The data collecting is in the form of words, phrase, clauses, and discourse that refer to dreams and individual responsibilities in Edith Wharton's Ethan Frome that is published by Charles Scribner's Sons in New York by the year of 1970 Ethan's incompatibilities are incompatibilities between his dream to become an engineer and his responsibility to take care of his parents,incompatibilities between his dream to live in town and his responsibility to live in isolated farm, and incompatibilities between his dream to run away with his lover and his responsibility for living with his wife. The effects of Ethan's incompatibilities are frustration, loneliness, and suicide attempt. Frustration can be seen when Ethan's plans to become an engineer must be vanished. Ethan's marriage to Zeena also makes him frustrated. Ethan is frustrated with his life in Starkfield and his inability to express his love to Zeena's cousin, Mattie.Moreover, Zeena and Mattie also experience frustration. It can be seen when Ethan's plan to start a new life in a town must be canceled. Besides, Mattie also frustrated when Ethan realizes that there is no way out to go to the West.Loneliness in Ethan's life can be seen when Ethan living far away from relatives and friends. Ethan never talking to his mother and his wife become sick and silent.The effect of incompatibilities on the climax is suicide attempt. Mattie tries to influence Ethan to commit suicide.
