Abstract

This thesis focuses on the untranslatability in the rendering of Mochtar Lubis' Senja di Jakarta into English. There are two questions to answer. First,what are the types of untranslatability found in the rendering of Mochtar Lubis'Senja di Jakarta into Twilight in Djakarta translated by Claire Holt? Second,what are the alternative ways of solving the problem of the untranslatability in the rendering of the novel? The source of data used in thisresearch is a novel written by Mochtar Lubis entitled Senja di Jakarta into Twilight in Djakarta translated by Claire Holt.There are many untranslatable terms are found in the novel. Thus, this novel is an appropriate novel to be analyzed. This research uses descriptive method. The researcher collects the data from the novel. Then, the researcher classifies them into two types of untranslatability and also to the alternative ways to solve the problem of untranslatability and analyzes them. Finally, the researcher concludes the analysis. There are two major discussions in this research. First is about the types of untranslatability. Due to the types of untranslatability, it is divided into two types, namely linguistic untranslatability and cultural untranslatability.Second is about the alternative ways of solving the problem of untranslatability.Dealing with the alternative ways of solving the problem of untranslatability,there are two alternative ways applied in the translation, namely translation by cultural substitution and translation using a loan word or loan word plus explanation. In this research, the researcher finds several terms those which untranslatable and also some of the data actually can be translated but their meaning change. In this case, the translator should give more explanation toward the untranslatable terms.
