Abstract

This research focuses on dependency relation. There are two statements of the problems.First, how are the constituents of English simple sentences in Arthur Miller's Death of A Salesman syntagmatically interrelated in terms of dependency relations? Second, what are the grammatical functions of those constituents? This is a library research, because the researcher uses drama as source of data. In this research, the source of data is an English drama entitled Death of A Salesman. This research uses descriptive method. The researcher collects the data, classifies, makes the analysis, and concludes the analysis. The researcher uses the English simple sentences taken from Miller's Death ofA Salesman as her data. The analysis of this research is divided into two parts. The first one is the dependency relation of the constituents, and the second is the grammatical functions of English simple sentences constituents. From the analysis dependency relation of the constituents, the researcher knows that the words in the sentence have relation with each other. The relation is not just haphazardly arranged, but they relate to each other; they depend on each other. From the analysis the grammatical functions of English simple sentences constituents, the researcher shows that the dependency relation can also happen among the grammatical functions namely subject, predicate and object. The relation is not just haphazardly arranged, but they relate to each other; they depend on each other. By analyzing the simple sentences, the researcher shows the relation of words and the relation of the grammatical functions in simple sentences. The analysis shows that an English simple sentence is not as simple as it looks like. They also need to be arranged correctly to be understood well so that we can get the message of the sentence correctly.
