Abstract
Literature is a means of communication which represents human thoughts through written language. There are three kinds of literature: fiction which consist of short story and novel; drama and poetry. Novel is a long story written in prose. It has various incidents. Novel is also a picture of real life, manners, and of time in which it is written. Therefore, the readers can imagine the time and place of the story that are meant by the author. In this case, the writer chooses a novel a written by David Herbert Lawrence entitled The Virgin and The Gipsy. This novel is first published in 1930. Lawrence himself, is one of the famous English Novelist. The Virgin and The Gipsy is one of his famous novels, besides his other works. Besides using the literary thories to analyze the data, the writer uses the psycological approach to analyze the character's psychological problems in The Virgin and The Gipsy. It can be clearly that the main character,Yvette, faces so many psychological problems in her life. The writer's reason in analyzing The Virgin and The Gipsy is due to the problem that is experienced by Yvette, the main character in D.H Lawrence's The Virgin and The Gipsy. Yvette gets the pressure and the bad treatment fom her grandmother, her father and also from her aunt. She defiances them and begins to do everything against them after she meets the gipsy man. It influences Yvette's behavior, she grows up as an unfree and unhappy person because everything of her life is dominated by her grandmother, father, and her aunt. The problems which are discussed in the analysis are: (1) The conditions showing Yvette considered as a “virgin” in correlation with the will, unconsciousness and sexuality. The analysis focuses on the ways how the main character is considered as a “virgin.” (2) The conditions making Yvette lose her virginity in correlation with the will, consciousness and sexuality. It focuses on the analysis of how some conditions can make Yvette lose her virginity. (3) The change happening to Yvette after losing her “virginity.” Yvette becomes an individual when she has found a full and free expression of life and love. In this writing, the writer takes the main source of data from the novel The Virgin and The Gipsy written by D.H Lawrence, by collecting some data and other references in order to support this thesis. Besides, theory of psychoanalysis is used for analyzing the cause how Yvette experiences the psychological problems that cannot be solved. There is also the theory of character, characterization and the concept of virginity in correlation with the will, consciousness and unconsciousness, and sexuality are used to explain about the effects of main character's problems.
