Abstract

This study, entitled An Analysis on Marriage Problems in William Somerset's Merry Go Round, is aimed: (1) to describe the marriage problems,(2)to find the effects of marriage problems. Library research including internet browsing is used to formulate the conceptual data that related studies. The data corpus of the main character that is found in William Somerset's Merry Go Round. They are can be in the form of dialogues, or narratives. Moreover,Psycho-social approaches are taken to analyze the data. The marriage problems happening in the novel are husband and wife relationship, sexual relationship, sexual division of labor, and economic condition.Firstly,husband and wife relationship problem can be seen in the absence of Basil's love. This gets effect, namely Basil's pretending to love Jenny, Basil's feeling hopeless, Basil's feeling depressed, Basil's living with his wife inharmoniously, Basil's committing adultery. Husband and wife relationship problem can also be indicated by Basil's committing adultery. The effects of it are Jenny's suspicion, Jenny's jealousy,Jenny's depression, Jenny's death. Secondly,sexual competition problem can be confirmed by Paul's sexual unability. The effects of it are Mrs. Castilyon's loneliness, and Mrs. Castilyon's adultery.Thirdly,sexual division problem can be seen when a wife, namely Jenny must quit her job when getting married. The effect of it is economic difficulty in Basil-Jenny marriage. Fourthly, economic condition problem is seen clearly by the low income of Basil's. The effect of it is fequent quarrel between the couple.
