Abstract
In this thesis the writer wants to study about the English simple sentences by analyzing the construction of English simple sentence, and by comparing the English simple sentences with the Manggarainese simple sentences in order to know the similarities and the differences of both languages. In supporting this research the writer collects the data from The Jakarta Post newspaper, published from February to March 2004. In analyzing the data, the researcher uses descriptive method by collecting the data, classifying the data, and analyzing the data. After analyzing the data, the writer makes the conclusion. In this research, there are four kinds of simple sentences that are analyzed by the writer. Each kind of simple sentences consists of many sentences structures. Those kinds of simple sentences are: Simple Sentences Using Be as Linking Verbs 30 (38,96%), Simple Sentences Using Transitive Verbs 14(18,18%), and Simple Sentences Using Intransitive Verbs 17 (22,79), and also Simple Sentences Using Others Linking Verbs 16 (20,77%). English and Manggarainese Simple Sentences have similarity, that is the Transitive Verbs, the Intransitive Verbs and the Others Linking Verbs, all of them are used as the predicates of the sentences. Furthermore, the difference of both languages is lain on the use of the be. In English, be is used as a part of predicate in a sentence. Meanwhile, in Manggarainese, be does not used as a part of predicate in a sentence.
