Abstract

This study talks about a married woman. namely Kitty who has violatec God's commandment by doing adultery. In accordance with the problem, the objectives ofthis study are to describe Kitty's reasons for doing adultery, Kitty's advantages and disadvantages of doing adultery, and Kitty's failure of life by doing adultery. Further, the writer uses library research and Internet browsing to formulate the conceptual data and then use them to find the relevant data in this novel. Beside that, this research uses psychological approach to analyze the psychological data descriptively. Kitty's reasons for doing adultery are the absence of her love, Walter's unproved love, and her mother's ambition. Mrs. Garstin ambition to be a rich woman has influenced Kitty to be a bitchy girl who often plays man against the other. Consequently, Kitty is difficult to get a husband. Then, her sister's engagement comes, and it enforces Kitty to marry Walter Fane without love. In her marriage, she is lack of love and attention, as her husband never cares of her. Finally, Kitty commits adultery to heal her loneliness. Kitty's advantages of doing adultery are getting love, affection and attention. In her secretive affair, Kitty can get everything she never finds in her husband, namely love, attention and passionate man. Beside that, she gets a light that has succeeded to open her mindI. She has realized every mistake she has ever done to her husband and wants to change her bad behavior by treating him well as his friend. On the other hand, Kitty's disadvantages of doing adultery are getting anxiety and getting suffered. Although she can get love, attention and a passionate man in her adultery, Kitty is never able to stop her anxiety from feeling worried that her husband will know her betrayal and then kill her as the punishment. Kitty also has to face a bitter fact that her dream to marry Charles will never come true, as he has chosen to defend his career that depends on his wife than marry Kitty. Kitty's adultery is called as her failure of life. The reason is her inability to function normally as a wife for her husband, Walter Fane. As a good wife who must be loyal, Kitty has betrayed her husband by committing adultery, a bad action that has given her a new name as an adulterous woman.
