Abstract

Literature is a means of communication to express human's ideas, thoughts, and feelings toward life through written language. Literary works can be divided into three types, they are: novel, drama or play, and poetry. Drama or play is representation of life and character through action and dialogues and acted on the stage. In this case, the writer chooses a drama written by Eugene O'Neil entitled Desire Under The Elms. This drama is first published in 1924. Desire Under The Elms is one of his best works because of its lasting success, and replacing Eugene O'Neil from the expressionist and theatrical experimental plays of his early career into psychological and character driven work. The writer's reason in analyzing Desire Under The Elms is due to the problem that is experienced by Eben Cabot, the main character in Eugene O'Neil Desire Under The Elms. Eben Cabot experiences Unresolved Oedipus Complex. He cannot solve his problem in phallic stage, in which the sexual urge increases, the boy's love for his mother become incestuous, and as the result, he recognizes that his father is a rival for his mother's affection. Eben Cabot's experiences are caused by several factors, they are: disharmonious in the family, Eben Cabot dreams of a mother's figure, and Ephraim Cabot's ignorance toward his sons. Unresolved Oedipus Complex experienced by Eben Cabot also influences his behavior, he grows to be unhappy man and also becomes hypocrite. In this writing, the writer takes the main source of the data from the drama entitled Desire Under The Elms written by Eugene O'Neil, and by collecting some data and other references in order to support this thesis. Besides, theory of Oedipus Complex and Unresolved Oedipus Complex are used for analyzing the causing of Eben Cabot's Unresolved Oedipus Complex, and theory of conflict and psychological conflict is used for analyzing the influence of Eben Cabot's Unresolved Oedipus Complex. The lesson that can be taken the drama entitled Desire Under The Elms is the boy who cannot solve his problem in phallic stage will cause his fail to solve his problem. The failure to resolve the Oedipus Complex means he grows by fearing that a power or jealous father might punish his for his feelings toward his mother, and also he will experience various psychological problems.
