Abstract

In this thesis, the writer wants to study about sex aspects in the English language based on perspectives of English magazines. These aspects indicate that there are some terms which refer to man, the term that refer to woman, and the alternative terms to neutralize both sexes into non sexists. Sex differences are the fundamental phenomenon, which indicate the difference between man and woman in human's daily life. This phenomenon is reflected them in the use of the English language that may influence in sociolinguistics especially in gender pattern. The conception of gender happens in both man and woman characteristics, which socially and culturally constructed. For instance woman has known as flexible, irrational, beauty, more emotional, ill-tempered person, graceful, elegant and also motherhood meanwhile man characterized by his power ability, strong, rational, and so on, but this phenomenon does not mean that man is superior to woman or otherwise woman inferior to man. Basically, gender difference could not a problem as long as the inequalities of gender is not exists. So that the balancing roles, sportiveness, neutralities, and free value between both sexes may wipe out or avoid the discrimination of both sexes in daily life. Scientific as the medium of interaction to communicate one and another may create or build the good interaction between man and woman. In this thesis, the writer would try to analyze sex aspects in the English language based on perspectives of English magazines, the writer uses the descriptive method as the procedure in solving the problems which describes the language phenomenon especially language and sex. The writer classifies the data into three parts, the first is the term that refers to man which classified into two parts; the gender specific use of man and the generic use of man, the second is the term that refers to woman and last the alternative term to neutralize both sexes into non sexists, which classified into three sub-units; the use of the plural forms, style-shifting, and the last is substitution. After that, the writer gives interpretation and makes simple explanation based on the meaning context of the sentences.
