Abstract

This research discusses linguistic form and the meaning of magical terms on J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. In this thesis, the writer wants to study deeper about linguistic form and the meaning of magical terms by analyzing the form of magical terms, kinds of meaning,and the meaning of magical terms. The source of data in this research is J.K. Rowling's novel entitled Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Besides, in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone there are two kinds of magical terms that have certain meaning. Because this research concerns about meaning, the writer takes this novel as source of the data. In making this research, the writer uses descriptive method. This study uses descriptive method because it makes a description systematically by using factual and accurate data. At first, the writer reading the J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone as object of analysis. After that, the writer selects the magical terms that have certain meaning. Then, the writer classifies the data and makes analysis. At last, the writer gives the conclusion. As the results of the study, the writer finds some forms of magical terms used in J.K. Rowling's HIarry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone,namely,noun, verb, and adjective. Noun itself consists of proper noun,concrete noun, and abstract noun. Besides, the writer also finds the meaning of magical terms, that is, specific terms with specific meaning and general terms with specific meaning. Then, the writer finds the kinds of meaning used in magical terms, they are denotative and connotative meaning.
