Abstract
This research discusses implicature that occurs in Arthur Miller's Death ofa Salesman. The writer wants to study deeper about implicature by analyzing the kinds of implicature in Arthur Miller's drama, the maxim that is violated in Arthur Miller's drama, the last is the purpose of the use of implicature in Arthur Miller's drama. The source of data in making this research is Arthur Miller's drama entitled Death Of Salesman. This research is concerning about implicature,that needs the source of data in conversation form. Therefore, the writer takes Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman as the source of data, because this drama is in conversation form. In making this research, the writer uses descriptive method. At first, the writer collects the data by reading all of the conversation in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman. Then the researcher classifies the data and makes interpretation. At last the writer gives the conclusion. The result of this research is the writer finds that the characters in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman use two kinds of implicature, they are conversational implicature and conventional impicature. When implicature occurs in conversation, it will violate one of the maxims out of four maxims such as maxim of quality, maxim of quantity, maxim of relevance, and maxim of manner. The use of implicature in the conversation has five purposes, namely representatives, directives, commissives, and expressives.
