Abstract

Literature is a means of communication to express human's mind, feelings, and attitudes toward life through written languages. Literary works can be divided into three types; they are novel, drama, and poetry. Novel is a type of prose that consists of some supporting elements, such as, theme, plot, character, and situation. Novel describes things that frequently happen in the daily life. When someone reads a novel, clear description and understanding about the content of the novel appear in his mind. Thus, the readers can take the knowledge and entertainment as a lesson, which has relation to the daily life. Reading novel makes the readers know about the era and society in which the author lives at that time, and it also gives them some ideas of general knowledge related to the society. In this case, the writer chooses the novel entitled Sons and Lovers written by D.H. Lawrence, which was published in 1913 and known as one of his best works, because the story of Sons and Lovers resembles his life. The writer's reason in analyzing Sons and Lovers is due to the conflict happening in the Walter Morel's family, especially the portrait of lower class family, who is affected by industrial revolution. The problems happen to a husband, who also acts as a father, and directly or not, gives some effects to his wife and children. In the beginning of the story, Walter Morel is an active and smart person in doing his job because of his experiences in having the job since the age of ten. However, after all conflicts that appear in his family, he turns into a brutal person, who loves drinking alcohol, and shows himself as an uneducated person. In this writing, the writer takes the main source of the data from the novel entitled Sons and Lovers written by D.H. Lawrence, and by collecting some data and other references in order to support this thesis. Besides, theory of character is used for analyzing the changes of Walter Morel's character; theory of setting is used for analyzing the portrait of an industrial revolution's victim; and theory of social conflict is used for having an understanding to the appearances of conflict between father with sons, and husband with wife in the novel entitled Sons and Lovers. Conflicts which are discussed in the analysis is the portrait of a head of family coming from lower class society namely Walter Morel, who becomes the victim of industrial revolution. At the first time, Walter Morel is a kind, smart, and clever person in taking his job, but then, the effect of industrial revolution changes him into a brutal person, who loves drinking alcohol, and becomes uneducated person. All of these attitudes make his family does not respect him anymore. Many lessons can be taken from the novel entitled Sons and Lovers to face the industrial modern, especially is for a head of family. As a man who gives life and care, he must be ready physically and mentally, and in financial matter for his family. A head of family is said to be ready physically and mentally when he is able to face the difficulty of life and take care of the family well. Meanwhile, a head of family is said to be ready in financial matter, he is able to fulfill the family’s needs and take a decision, eventhough the needs for the family must be taken or not. In this case, the most important thing is to keep good attitude and always be responsible and, to communicate with other members of family.
