Abstract

The objectives of the research are: to find out the kinds of ironical circumstance, to describe the effects of the ironical circumstances upon the main characters, to explain the effects of the ironical circumstances upon the other characters; and to analyze the moral teaching. The library research is done to find the relevant theoretical sources of the main character, irony, moral teaching, and moral teaching in literature. The underlying theory is used to find the data. The data are all of the words, phrases, clauses, or further discourse that contain the ironical circumstances of the main characters in Tennessee William's play Streetcar Named Desire. The kinds of ironical circumstances in the play are dramatic and cosmic irony. Dramatic irony is the contrast between what a character believes and the reality. Cosmic irony is a contrast between what a character expects and what he gets. Irony brings the bad effects not only to the main character but also to the other characters. The effects of the ironical circumstance upon the characters are that all of them do not obtain what they really expect in their life. The moral teaching that can be drawn from the play is that people must be honest not only to themselves but also to one and the other.
