Abstract

This study has an objective in discovering the application of Grice's Cooperative Principle. This objective is broken down into: (1) To describe how are the maxims in the conversation applied in “Sunday Brunch” program. (2) To describe the obstacles found in applying the maxims. This is a descriptive research entitled “The Analysis of Cooperative Principle Used By The Callers in "Sunday Brunch" Program On SAS FM Radio Station - Solo". This topic is adopted according to the consideration of the interesting phenomenon within how the cooperative principle in the conversation is generated. This study used pragmatic approach based on Grice's theory of implicature covering of cooperative principle and its maxims namely maxim of quantity, quality, relevance and manner. The source of data in this study is the conversation in “Sunday Brunch” program on SAS FM radio station-Solo. Meanwhile, the technique of collecting data of this research selecting the sample according to a certain criterion. The result of the study shows that the callers tend to be balance dealing with their fulfillment the maxims of cooperative principle. This means that not the entire participant in the conversation have shared sufficient, relevant, true and appropriately. The callers sometimes violate one or more maxims of cooperative principle.
