Abstract

In essence language function is as a communication tool. One of the important language skills is a writing skill. This skill is considered important because by writing people are able to express their ideas or feeling. Mater Dei Church had a medium named Inter Nos magazine to accommodate writings containing news and opinions. This was because they had problems, namely the lack of interest and their insight in terms of writing. Catholic teenagers called Remaja Katolik (Rekat) of the church were still confused in writing news and opinions which are brief, compact, and clear. The Rekat of the church had not mastered the spelling in the Indonesian language. With this activity the Rekat of Mater Dei church got better insights on the procedures of writing news and opinions, were able to choose interesting topics and deliver them in writing, and were able to edit the writing so that the Rekat hadbetter quality of writing, had direct experience, and were able to publish the results of his writings in Inter Nos magazine. The last but not least was that the Rekat of the church were highly motivated to write.The method used to carry out the community service activities was to first provide theory related to news and opinions and then to proceed with the practice of writing and then editing (news and opinions). The result wasthe Rekat’s increasing skill in writing news and opinions. Their interest in writing was also increasing with the presence of the Inter Nos magazine, namely the medium that accommodates their writings.
