Abstract

This study was related to the imageries and symbol portraying loneliness applied in William Wordsworth's “I Wandered Lonely as a cloud”. It focused on one objective of the study, namely, (1)to reveal imageries that describe loneliness in “I Wandered Lonely as a cloud and (2) to reveal symbols that describe loneliness in “ I Wandered Lonely as a cloud”. This study was in descriptive in nature. The researcher used of theory of imagery,symbol, psychology and psychological disorder. Moreover,structural and psychological approaches were applied to analyze the data. The data were taken through library research including internet browsing. In “I Wandered Lonely as cloud”, the researcher found out visual imagery,organic imagery and kinesthetic imagery that were shown by the speaker's loneliness. Visual imagery portrayed the beauty of daffodil. It could be lost his problem. Organic imagery described the speaker's sadness and sorrow.Kinesthetic imagery explained that the speaker described the beautiful of daffodils and their movement as dancing. It explained how daffodils grew and their physical movement. The researcher found out symbols that portrayed the loneliness of the speaker in “I Wandered Lonely as a cloud”. Symbol of Alienated portrayed the speaker who was alienated from the society. Symbol of Deserted described the lonely person. It happens because he is different from society. Symbol of Depressed explained that the speaker had many pressures from society.
