Abstract

This study discusses to-infinitive. It is concerned with the transformational processes and functions of to-infinitive in sentence constructions. This research is descriptive in nature, which involves the following steps: collecting, classifying, and analyzing data. The source of the data was Campus magazine published by Pelita Harapan University. The population of this research was all to-infinitives used in sentence constructions. The technique applied to take the sample was simple random sampling. It was done by selecting certain multiple numbers. The multiple number used was 5. The analysis method applied to describe the transformational processes of to-infinitive was expansion technique. While, to determine their functions,tagmemic method was used. The data analysis showed that the to-infinitives transformed from clauses were 125 in number, consisting of 44 (35.2%) independent clauses and 81(64.8%) dependent clauses. The dependent clauses included 21 (16.8%) adverbial clauses, 18 (14.4%) adjective clauses, and 42 (33.6%) noun clauses. Meanwhile, the functional slots filled by to-infinitives were 9 (7.1%) as subject which consisted of 3 (2,36%) as real subject and 6 (4,72%) as delayed subject, 31(24.41%) as object which comprised 29 (22.83%) as direct object and 2 (1.57%) as object of preposition. Next, 11 (8.66%) to-infinitives functione as subjective complement. Moreover, 76 (59.84%) to-infinitives functioned as modifier comprising 56 (44.09%) as modifier of pro(noun), 11 (8.66%)as modifier of verb, 7 (5.51%) as modifier of adjective, and 2 (1.57%) as modifier of sentence.There were no to-infinitives that functioned as modifier of adverb in the data.
