Abstract

This study discusses the use English verbal phrases. It deals with two problems, namely the kinds and functions of verbal phrases in English sentence constructions. This research is descriptive in nature, which involves the following steps: collecting, classifying, and analyzing data. The source of the data is the English novel Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows written by J. K. Rowling. The population of this research is all of the sentences containing verbal phrases. To obtain the sample, this research applies simple random sampling. It means that the technique is done by selecting certain multiple number. The multiple number applied here is 30. Furthermore, there are three kinds of verbal phrase, namely participial phrase, gerund phrase, and infinitive phrase. The data are 128 sentences which contain verbal phrase within it. The analysis shows that 49 data (38.28%) are participial phrase which consist 44 data (34.37%) present participial phrase and 5 data (3.91%) past participial phrase. Next, 19 data (14.84%) are gerund phrase and 60 data (46.88%) are infinitive phrase. Then, there are four functions of verbal phrase, which are as subject, object, complement, and modifier. There are 141 data of verbal phrases. The analysis indicates that 3 data (2.13%) function as subject in sentence. Further, 42 data (29.79%) function as object in sentence which consist of 27 (19.15%) direct object and 15 data (10.64%) object of preposition. Next, 16 data (11.34%) function as complement in sentence which include 9 data (6.38%) subjective complement and 7 data (4.96%) objective complement and 7 data (4.96%) objective complement. Furthermore, 80 data (54.74%) function as modifier in sentence which include 58 data (41.14%) modifier of pro(non), 7 data (4.96%) modifier of verb, 13 data (9.22%) modifier of adjective, and 2 data (1.42%) modifier of adverb. There are no data that functions as modifier of sentence.
