Abstract

This thesis focuses on a study of meaning shift in the rendering of Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms into Pertempuran Penghabisan translated by Toto Sudarto Bactiar. In this case, the writer intends to study more about kinds of meaning shift based on the cultural distances. Moreover, the writer also tries to give the suggested translations of the terms which refer to meaning shift based on the cultural distances. In the process of writing this thesis, firstly, the writer collects the data which contain meaning shift phenomena and analyzes them one by one.Afterwards, the writer tries to find the effective solutions of the intended problems. Considering to those steps, the most appropriate research method that is used by the writer is descriptive method. Additionally,this thesis also belongs to library research because all the data used by the writer are in the forms of written data. In this regard, the novel A Farewell to Arms and the novel Pertempuran Penghabisan are said to be the primary data; while the other references which support the process of finishing this thesis are said to be the secondary data. This thesis contains 4 data which belong to meaning shift based on ecology (related to the condition of the nature), 2 data which refer to meaning shift based on feature of material culture (related to the different materials that are used in each countries), 4 data which refer to meaning shift based on feature of social culture (related to the norms and characteristics of the society), and 20 data which belong to meaning shift based on feature of language (related to the language that is seen from lexical, syntactical, phonological, and morphological aspect). By doing this analysis, the writer understands about kinds of meaning shift based on the cultural distances. Moreover, the writer knows the way to analyze them and she can give the suggested translations of those meaning shift to the readers as well.
