Abstract

In this research, the writer wants to discuss about English imperative sentence. There are two questions to answer. At first, What are the structures of English imperative sentence? The second, what are the differences and the similarities of English imperative sentences and its equivalence in Indonesian? To achieve the objectives, this study employs library research for collecting data. There are two kinds of data: primary and secondary data. The primary data are taken from a famous novel written by Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice. The secondary data are obtained from the books, such as grammar books, linguistics books and syntax books. To support this research, the writer uses a descriptive method to solve the problem by collecting, classifying,analyzing and making a conclusion the data. In this research, the writer discusses two kinds of imperative sentence.The first is command, and the second is request. From the analysis of command,the writer finds three types of command. They are command without a subject,command with a subject, and negative command. Meanwhile, request only studies about telling something politely. The similarities of English and Indonesian imperative sentence are both of them have command and request. While, English and Indonesian imperative sentences have two differences. The first is English imperative sentence expresses a verb, but Indonesian imperative sentence expresses a predicate. The second is English imperative sentences do not have an additional suffix. If we want to stress request or command, we can use do form. Meanwhile, some Indonesian imperative sentences need an additional suffix -lah, but some others do not need.The suffix -lah is used to stress command or request.
