Abstract

The research discusses function and formation of adjectives in English. In this research, the researcher analyzes the two problems, namely the functions and kinds of English derived adjectives in the Time magazine of 2006. The method of research used in this research is descriptive method. This method uses some steps: collecting, classifying, and analyzing the data. Further, in this research the researcher discusses three functions of adjective. They are subjective complement, objective complement and modifier of noun or pronoun. The data analysis shows that 31 that (31,09%) are subjective complement, 4 data (4,20%) are objective complement, and 65 data (64,70%) are modifier of noun or pronoun. Furthermore, the data analysis based on the kinds of derivation shows that suffix-y are 6 (5,88%), suffix-end are 8 data (,56%), suffix-en are 3 data (2,52%), suffix-are 6 data (5,88%), suffix-ly are 3 data (2,52%), suffix-less are 5 data (5,04%) suffix – ous are 10 data (10,08%), suffix –ai are 12 data (11,76%), suffix-ic are 12 data (11,76%), suffix-ing are 3 data (2,52%), suffix- ive are 11 data (10,92%)
