Abstract

This thesis discuses women inferiority that happens in D.H Lawrence's Sons - and Lovers. The objectives of the research are (1) to describe women inferiority in D.H Lawrence's Sons and Lovers, (2) to find out the effects of the women inferiority on the women themselves and their families. Library research including internet browsing is employed to find the relevant theories, to form conceptual models used to find the data. The data corpus of this research are all of the phrases, clauses,sentences paragraphs, and even discourses related to women inferiority in D.H Lawrence's Sons And Lovers. Sociological approach is used to analyze the data. Women inferiority can be seen in three aspects (1) moral aspect, (2) ability-physical aspect and (3) intellectual aspect. Women inferiority in moral aspect can be seen in the character of Gertrude Morel and Clara Dawes.They often get violence from their husbands by forcing them to follow all of their hires because their husbands think that woman are inferior and only give them bad persuasion.Society compiles that women are morally inferior so people always spied them as a prisoner in worst it happen on a widow. Clara Dawes, as a widow, must limit all of her movements and relationships. Women inferiority in ability-physical aspect- can be observed in the character of Clara Dawes, a smart woman but she cannot sit on the higher job position because she is only a woman. The character of Mirriam represents women inferiority in intellectual aspect. She does not get an opportunity to study as men get. Those all gives some effects to the characters themselves and to their families. (1) The effect of women inferiority in moral aspect firstly happens on the character of Gertrude Morel that she becomes an audacious wife and an outsider to her husband. The events that happen on Gertrude's character give some effects to her children that they become dependent to her much, more extreme there is happens an Oedipus complex that her son loves her in wrong way. The effects of women inferiority in moral aspect also happens on the character of Clara Dawes that she feels as criminal, feels uncomfortable because of other's sharp sight. (2)The effect of women inferiority in ability-physical aspect also happens on Clara that she becomes unrespectable to her boss and she becomes a reclusive person. (3) The effect of women inferiority in intellectual aspect happens on Mirriam that she has unconfident feeling and she ahs no satisfy toward herself.
