Abstract

This research discusses the translation of modal auxiliaries in J.K.Rowling's Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. In this research, the researcher wants to study more about the strategies which is used in translating English modal auxiliaries into Indonesian. Furthermore, the researcher also intends to know the level of fidelity of the translation of modal auxiliaries in J.K.Rowling's novel. The source of the data is J.K. Rowling's novel entitled Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban which is translated into Harry Potter dan Tawanan Azkaban by Listiana Srisanti. There are many modal auxiliaries which are stated in this novel. Thus, this novel is an appropriate source of the data to be analyzed. The kind of research which is used in this research is descriptive method.The researcher collects the data after reading the content of the novel. Then, the researcher classifies the data and analyzes them. Finally, the researcher makes a conclusion based on the results of the analysis. The results of the analysis are 100 data containing modal auxiliaries;they belong to the meaning of ability, permission, possibility, and the omission of modal auxiliaries. Moreover, modal auxiliaries have logical necessity,obligation,prohibition, advice, and suggestion meaning. Besides that, they have prediction meaning, certainty, and the future meaning. At last, modal auxiliaries can also mean volition and offering. Concerning with the level of fidelity of the translation of modal auxiliaries, it results some modal auxiliaries reaching the high level of fidelity,one of them obtaining the mid level of fidelity, and some data belonging to the low level of fidelity.
