Abstract
In this research, the rersearch discusses word formation through shortening, namely acronym, blending, and clipping. Acronym is a word coined by taking the initial letters of the words in a title or phrase and using them as a new word.Meanwhile, blending is a process of the fusion of two words into one.On the other hand, clipping is a process of cutting off the beginning or the end of the word,or both, leaving the past to stand for the whole. This thesis offers two problems, namely the kinds of shortened words found in the Time magazine and the way to pronounce the shortened words. The method used in this research is descriptive in nature, involving some steps: collecting, classifying, and analyzing the data. The source of data of this research is Time magazine. In this research, the researcher analyzes all of the data.At last, the researcher draws a conclusion based on the result of the analysis. The result of the study on the word formation processes is as follows: 117comprising 99 (84,6%) acronyms, 3 (2,6%) blendings, and 15(12,8%)clippings.
