Abstract
Language is a means of communication between people and other people.By learning language, we know a literature indirectly. Literature is a means of an art to express and to communicate thoughts, feeling, and attitudes. Literature can be divided into three groups, namely: prose, poetry, and drama. Furthermore, the writer takes one of them; that is drama as the object of the analysis. Drama is a literary work that contains of dialogue between an actor and others actor. Drama can be qualified if it presents about human life. Then, from this story, we can feel a beauty of the story. The writer's reason in writing this research, are: (1) to know what is the meaning of hamartia and how hamartia can happen on the main characters in Antigone written by Sophocles, (2) to know what reasons and effects having hamartia on the main characters, and (3) to hope that the readers can know and understand about hamartia in Sophocles' work entitled Antigone. Moreover, the object of analzing is a play entitled Antigone written by Sophocles. The writer analyzes the main characters in this drama, they are Antigone and Creon. Antigone is a woman who has a strong bravery to defend the truth and to raise the righteousness in Thebes. Her bravery is used to rebell King Creon because Antigone sees what King Creon's action is wrong and cruel to her brother, Polynieces. Antigone wants Polynieces' corpse to get an appreciation and honourable Greek funeral eventhough her brother is as a traitor. Antigone takes a wrong decision to break King Creon's law. Antigone has bravery to bury her brother's corpse alone and she has been ready to face the consequence eventhough the consequence is death. On the other hand, King Creon is her uncle, Creon is a man who has a cruel action and he is proud of his power without paying attention to other people's misfortune. Creon takes a wrong decision by making a law;he states that everybody who buries Polynieces will get his punishment. In fact,Antigone (his niece) buries Polynieces' corpse and she has to accept her punishment or even die. Finally, Creon also must face the risk in his life if he does not change his decision to make Antigone free. But, it is too late. Antigone has already committed suicide in the cave, hanging herself just like her mother,Jocasta does.Creon has lost his son (Haemon) because Haemon feels desperate when he finds Antigone die. Creon also has lost his wife (Eurydice) together because she cannot accept his son's death. In this writing, the writer takes the main source of data from the play entitled Antigone written by Sophocles and also collects some supporting data. The theories are hamartia, tragedy, and conflict. Theory of hamartia explains how hamartia can happen to the main characters and the effect of hamartia also happens to them, while theory of tragedy is used to explain that the life of the main characters are tragic and suffering. Besides, theory of sociological and psychological conflict is used to explain about their obstacles to struggle their hamartia.
