Abstract
The main problem in this thesis is prepositional phrases. Prepositional phrases are a group of words consisting of a preposition and its object, including any modifiers of that object. These can be analyzed from their functions and their similarities and differences in Indonesian. In this research, the researcher uses descriptive method because it is considered as the most appropriate method in relation to the problems of this research. This method uses some steps: collecting, classifying and analyzing the data. At last, the writer makes the conclusion. Meanwhile, the data of this research are sentences which contain prepositional phrases found in Newsweek magazine. In fact, the population of this research is only 75 sentences, so it is not too large in number to analyze. That is why, this study applies total sampling. It means that all of the data are analyzed one by one. There are two functions of prepositional phrases to discuss in this research. They are an adjective and an adverb. Functions as an adjective include modifier of noun and modifier of pronoun. The total number of this function is 32 data (42,67%). Functions as an adverb include modifier of verb, modifier of adjective, modifier of adverb, modifier of sentence, and as complement. The total number of this function is 43 data (57,3%). Moreover, there is a problem which is not found in the data namely, prepositional phrase functioning as objective complement. Besides, this research also discusses the equivalents of those prepositional phrases as well as the similarities and the differences in Indonesian. The equivalent of English and Indonesian prepositional phrases could be seen from the form in the sentence. The similarity of both prepositional phrase lies on the structure and the function. While, the differences lay on the rendering of the English prepositional phrases. English prepositional phrases may be a simple noun. They are not in the form of prepositional phrase either.
