Abstract
The main problem in this research is the change of the category and function of words in sentences, known as as conversion. Conversion is the change of the category of words without any reduction or addition. This research belongs to library research, since the researcher uses magazine as source of data. The data of this research are taken from weekly magazine,namely,Newsweek magazine. The researcher uses descriptive method to solve the problems, because this method is regarded more suitable with the problems of this research. This method is used with some steps: collectiong,classifying and analyzing the data. In this research, the researcher does not use any sample, because all of the data that is, 30 conversion in 30 sentences are still possible to analyze. The result of the research is that one of the problem is not presented by the data, namely conversion from adjective to verb, conversion from a closed category to any other category, partial conversion, dan conversion within secondary word classes. Moreover, the percentage of the result of analysis is as follow: from 30 sentences which contains 30 words which undergo the conversion, 15 (50%) conversion from verb into noun; 6 (20%) as stative verbs to nouns, 4 (13,3%)as naming event or activity, 3 (10%) s object of verb, 1 (3,3%) as instrument of verb and 1 (3,3%) noun as manner of verb-ing. Then, the result of the change of the words which undergo conversion from noun into verb is 13(43,3%);1(3,3%) as to give noun or to provide with noun, 5 (16,6%) as verb expressing the action done with the noun as instrument, 2 (6,6%) verb meaning of act as the noun with respect something, 1 (3,3%) as verb meaning to send by means of the noun or go by noun and 4 (13,3%) making something into the original noun. While, the word which undergo the conversion in slight changes in pronunciation is 1 (3,3%) and in slight changes in stress is also 1 (3,3%).
